NEXT RACE MEETING

CLIFTON-ON-TEME

Sunday 23rd April 2017, First Race 2 pm

This right-handed course became available after the closure of the Clifton-on-Teme’s previous course at Knightwick.

The first part is relatively flat in contrast to the second half of the course, which runs up one side of a hill and down the other. In recent years, the fields have been small but competitive.

The runners start with their backs to fence eight and have a short run before they encounter the first jump after which they take a sharp right hand turn and race towards fence two in the home straight.

Just after the winning post they make a right hand turn en route to fence three (open ditch). The more astute rider can save several lengths at this fence if it is taken in the left hand corner (a la Canal Turn).

The runners bear left immediately after this fence and run uphill briefly before making a right handed turn. On the run to the summit of the hill they meet fences four, five and six at regular intervals.

They then turn right and along the top of the hill to meet fence seven (This fence has had several locations in the past but this now appears to be its permanent home).

The runners continue downhill and through a slight chicane to fence eight, where the process is then repeated for another one and a quarter circuits.

Winners are usually in front by the second last but lengths can be saved on the final bend if the horse is nimble enough.
