The 14 Point-to-Point regions were created back in the 1970s and would probably have continued well into the future until Covid arrived when it became obvious that increased co-operation was required to overcome these problems.
Following informal discussions, it was seen there were major benefits to be derived from a merger between the old North West and West Midland Areas, with all parties having similar aims so it was a natural fit rather than a marriage of convenience.
The Welsh Border Area which had been dominant in the sport during the 1970s and 1980s had lost the bulk of its meetings over the past decade and that resulted in the remaining hunts having to make some difficult decisions.
A formal proposal for the creation of the new area, its officers and structures were approved at a meeting at Hagley Golf Club in May, so the West Mercian Area is now home to 21 meetings, 13 from the West Midlands, 2 from the Welsh Borders (Ludlow and United Pack) and the remainder from the North West.
The new area covers a natural line starting in Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Shropshire and Cheshire, with a small detour into Staffordshire and is in good hands with the experienced Jim Squires and Stuart Dickin providing guidance as Joint Chairman, while Nickie Sheppard and Nick Bostock share the Secretarial duties.
The North West and West Midlands have both made financial contributions to the administration of the new area but it is vitally important it has a healthy bank balance in order to cover unforeseen circumstances or to provide financial aid to meetings in the area if that is required and approved.
To help boost the new areas coffers they are holding an On-Line Auction with some brilliant prizes, donated by supporters from across seven counties. These include a box at Cheltenham’s Hunter Chase evening, Behind the Scenes at ITV’s Morning Line, Dinners at well-known restaurants, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Several pieces of commissioned art work, Tickets for QIPCO Champions Day, Badminton Stable Visit, Tickets for Henley Regatta, Mornings on the gallops with well-known trainers, Pigs and Lambs for the freezer and approximately 9 days hunting with popular area packs. There is bound to be something there that you like, so why not look and see if anything takes your fancy and you can then register your bid at : – https://app.galabid.com/westmercianp2p
The area has worked had to retain its previous sponsors and to identify others that may find it beneficial to be involved in the future so your support at the Awards, Dinner and Dance at Hagley Golf Club on Saturday 25th September, shows the sport has emerged from recent challenges in a healthy state.
Your support also provides encouragement to everyone who participates in the sport, from jockeys, trainers and owners – without them we have nothing.
As we have seen elsewhere once a meeting folds it is very difficult to resurrect it, the newly constituted area provides a great opportunity to meet the challenges of the next decade and beyond, so please support the Auction and the Awards evening..
Come and help us celebrate West Midlands and North West Area successes during the 2020/2021 season.
See our new Champions crowned and the winners celebrate their achievements, before the two Areas cease to be separate entities and combine to form the new West Mercian Area.
